About LSRC

Loughborough Students' Rowing Club is one of the 54 constituent clubs of the Loughborough Students' Athletic Union, the UK's leading Student Sport Union and overall BUSA winners for the past 27 years. The club caters for oarsmen and women of all standards, from novice to international.

The AU has invested heavily in rowing through recent years raising the standard of the club in line with the rest of Loughborough Sport. It is testament to this commitment that LSRC is now widely regarded as one of the top student rowing clubs in the country. In 2006/7, LSRC finished fifth in the overall BUSA points table. Each year both Men's and Women's crews perform well at Henley normally racing in either Eights or Fours.

We fully utilise the world-class training facilities found at Loughborough University, a designated English Institute of Sport Centre of Excellence. These facilities include Powerbase, one of the finest free weights gyms in the country and specifically tailored for high performance athletes, modern and well equipped sports halls for circuit training, as well as leading human performance research laboratories. Club members regularly participate in performance trials and were some of the original athletes who participated in the development of the Powerbreathe® respiratory lung trainer.

Senior water training is based at the National Watersports Centre, Nottingham. We benefit from unlimited access to the 2000m regatta lake, the River Trent for long distance training, and custom designed gym facilities specifically for rowing. Novices boat from Loughborough Boat Club in nearby Hathern where the sheltered water provides an ideal environment for learning. Training is overseen by a full time professional coach, and qualified student coaches.

Coaching

Mitchell Rosenlund

Mitch Rosenlund arrived in the UK towards the end of last term and has dived straight into his role as the club's new coach. Mitch has given a short account of some of his achievements before joining us here. Mitch's personal blog of his experiences whilst coaching the club should also become very interesting as the season progresses.

"In 1999 I began volunteered on homeless outreach service; Eddies Van. Back then, Eddies Van volunteers provided support, conversation, tea and coffee to Brisbane's homeless each Tuesday night. Eddies Van has now grown to involve 120 volunteers who each week help feed, cloth and support over 350 people in Brisbane who are doing it tough (a majority of these are youths). Eddies works at the coalface of homelessness. It deals with real youth issues on the streets; drug use, suicide, welfare dependence and mental illness.

For many youth who call Eddies home it is their sole source of advocacy and representation. Whether that be attending their court cases, doctors appointments, real estate meetings or H.I.V clinics. It has been a real joy to walk beside many homeless youth on their journey providing an important connection and friendship.

Before I arrived into the coaching position at L.S.R.C; I was one of two Peer Ministers at St Joseph's College Gregory Terrace. In this role I was ensuring that all College students grow in wholeness and develop to their full potential. Working with the students from grade 5 through to grade 12, working to equip them with the skills to critique the world in the context of social justice. Beyond this, I have traveled on behalf of the Queeland Government throughout Queensland (predominantly Indigenous communities) visiting schools speaking on the positive benefits and rewards of adopting a healthy and physically active lifestyle.

This is where my true passion lies; not talking the social justice talk ..... but walking the walk along side those in need. Coaching wise; since 2004 I have been Women's Head Coach at the University of Queensland Boat Club and Queensland Academy of Sport Associate Coach. Last year I coached a squad of eight girls aged between 16 to 23 years. All of who were training towards National Championship and subsequent Australian and Olympic selection. Through the success of my squad I was appointed coach of the Queensland Women's Youth VIII.

15 kilograms ago, I was a cox. After leaving school I began coxing and represented my Club, State and Australia. With reference to education, I have a Bachelor Degree in Applied Science (Human Movements) and a Bachelor Degree in Secondary Education."

Now working as Loughborough Students Rowing Club full time coach in addition to being a World Class Start Satilite Coach, Mitch is already making his mark on the club, giving our boats a home and providing the top class coaching that will help fulfill rowing new title University Performance Sport.
